Grades 1-3

Create videos to entertain, connect, or change the world!

(iPad provided) Through various video shooting challenges nerds will become videographers and gain the know how to shoot videos for their youtube channel, family events, and class projects! Use video to connect, entertain, or educate. Secretly (whisper), the best part, your nerds will be able to teach you how to shoot amazing videos after they take this class.

Q. Why did the vampire give up acting? A. Because he couldn’t find a part he could sink his teeth into!

Access to digital video recording devices isn’t like it was when us adults were kids! We remember the huge bulky VHS camcorders! Now we have amazing quality video cameras in our pockets, with phones, tablets, computers, and cameras and can share those videos instantly with friends or the world. Everyone knows how to open the camera app on their phone or tablet and capture some footage (see the fun fact below on why we call it footage). But, do you really know how that camera works? Do you understand frame rate, 720p vs 4k, file sizes, exposure lock, white balance, green screen? Besides the technical, how about the aesthetics of a pleasing to the eye video? What about lighting? Nerds will learn the technical side to creating high quality digital video with any device, and how to frame their shots! Through various video shooting challenges nerds will become videographers!

Nerds who want to up their videography skills because they want to shoot video for online, or class projects, or for the family! Creative nerds who are shy or outgoing but are equally fascinated by cameras and video making will really love this class. We know not everyone wants to be in front of a camera, which is great because we need more skilled videographers behind the camera. But, if you love being in front of the camera, learning how to capture video of yourself, by yourself, is a great skill to have!

Various video shooting challenges:

  • Solo shooting
  • Shoot with a friend
  • Talking head video
  • Greenscreen
  • mini documentary
  • single camera dialogue scene
  • Slo-Mo shoot
  • Time-Lapse shoot

Nerds will learn the basics to:

  • Camera controls
  • Technical vocabulary
  • Lighting
  • Green screen
  • Audio capture
  • framing shots
  • video formats
  • What the pros do
Our Big Nerds classes for grades 4-7, are engaging and exciting and vary greatly in content and structure, but in some form there is always direct instruction from the teacher, guided practice, and independent or small group work with help and support from peers and staff. We usually begin the day with a team building activity and move into our first lesson. Next is a hands-on activity or project. Halfway through the class, kids will take a brief recess and snack break. A second lesson follows break and the kids will do another project/activity or continue one they were working on. It’s always fun and engaging with hands-on projects!

Class is 3hrs each day, so bring a snack for break time. Also, bring your own refillable water bottle. Don’t have one? Add our Nerding water bottle to your order and pick up on first day of class!

Your nerd will build and discover like these nerds have.
