IN-Person Class

Rock and Roll Geology

Are you ready to ROCK, ROLL, and RUMBLE?

Hey Nerds! Ready for a Rockin’ good time?!? Join us as we travel back into tectonic time and learn all about the spectacular history of our planet's geology! We'll work with gems, crystals, rocks and minerals, and model geologic processes using FOOD!

Q. What did the rock say to the geologist? A. Don’t take me for granite.

This class might seem dry on the surface, but it has a molten wild center! Come get the lowdown on some of the coolest pieces of Earth’s natural history and travel through geologic time. Get those rocks rollin’ in our tumbler, grow crystals, break geodes, test rocks and minerals, take core samples, enhance your spelunking skills, make rock art, and so much more! All while jamming out to some ROCK & Roll!

Nerds that are into rocks, minerals, and gems will love this gem of a class! For anyone who digs volcanoes or plate tectonics, this class will give you a landslide of discovery. If you think learning about the mind-bending topic of geologic processes sounds fun, come travel back in geologic time with us and learn about the bizarre, amazing ancient past of our planet!

Nerds in this class do a whole bunch of fun, hands-on activities! We’ll make like prospectors and archeologists as we pan for gold and dig for hidden fossils. We’ll go deep into dark caves (in our imagination, no cave exploration gear necessary) to find beautiful geodes and use blacklights to observe fluorescent rocks that glow in the dark!

Also, a bunch of our activities involve FOOD! We’ll use different foods to model geological processes and the Earth’s materials and layers. Nerds get to take part in delicious activities like cookie mining, cupcake core sampling, and growing sugar crystals! We’ll also rock out while we enjoy the sugary fruits of our labor :D.

In this class, we’ll travel through geologic time and deep into the layers of the Earth! Nerds will learn about rocks and minerals and discover how to identify them by testing properties like hardness and luster. We’ll also dig deep into the formation of fossils and crystals, and carve chunks out of topics like volcanoes, plate tectonics, and rock layering!

Plus, this class features a whole bunch of fun activities, including FOOD! See the previous subsection for more. 😋

Our Big Nerds classes for grades 4-7, are engaging and exciting and vary greatly in content and structure, but in some form there is always direct instruction from the teacher, guided practice, and independent or small group work with help and support from peers and staff. We usually begin the day with a team building activity and move into our first lesson. Next is a hands-on activity or project. Halfway through the class, kids will take a brief recess and snack break. A second lesson follows break and the kids will do another project/activity or continue one they were working on. It’s always fun and engaging with hands-on projects!

Class is 3hrs each day, so bring a snack for break time. Also, bring your own refillable water bottle. Don’t have one? Add our Nerding water bottle to your order and pick up on first day of class!

Your nerd will build and discover like these nerds have.
