Do you enjoy listening to music and wonder what it would be like to create your own? Have you ever thought about how a musician or composer imagines new music and designs a new piece of music?

It’s all about those good vibrations! This class introduces kids to the field of acoustical engineering as they design and improve acoustic devices! After experimenting with shapes and materials that reflect and absorb sound, kids use a decimeter to measure changes in volume. Kids use what they know about sound and vibrations to design instruments to make music of their own!

This is an amazing class for nerds who want to understand the underlying science behind sound and music, explore instruments, and discover their inner composer. We’ll learn how sound travels in waves and differing frequencies and how sound travels through air, solids, and water. We’ll also use everyday materials to design and build instruments that we can play and create our own music for.

Nerds will imagine and create amazing musical projects like:

  • Percussion, wind and string instruments (Did you know that the human voice is a wind instrument?!)
  • Glass bottle flute
  • Plastic cup percussion and body percussion
  • Building a guitar
  • Acoustic devices
  • Instrument mods to change sounds
  • DIY turntable and cone amplifier to play a real record
  • Musical compositions to share with the class!

This is a very hands-on class learning and experimenting with the science of sound, and how sound is created and moves through vibrations! Nerds will get to explore “real” instruments and we will discuss the scientific elements of sound and music while building and playing our own musical compositions. We’ll discuss how to create music and the freedom to make your own rules and designs!

Our Little Nerd classes for grades 1-3, are engaging and exciting and vary greatly in content and structure, but in some form there is always direct instruction from the teacher, guided practice, and independent or small group work with help and support from peers and staff. We usually begin the day with a team building activity and move into our first lesson. Next is a hands-on activity or project. Halfway through the class, kids will take a brief recess and snack break. A second lesson follows break and the kids will do another project/activity or continue one they were working on. Bottom line: It’s hands-on, interactive, fun learning.

Class is 3hrs each day, so bring a snack for break time. Also, bring your own refillable water bottle. Don’t have one? Add our Nerding water bottle to your order and pick up on first day of class!
