IN-Person Class

Game Coding with Scratch

Don’t just play games, create them!

Learn to build your own animated game from Scratch with code blocks and computational logic!

Q: Why did the computer squeak? A. Because someone stepped on its mouse!

Have you ever thought about building your own video game? Coding skills are a necessity in our increasingly digital world, and learning to code makes your nerd a technology creator instead of just a technology consumer! Come become a game developer with us as we use kid-friendly block coding software to learn coding concepts and create games, scenes, and animations!

Does your nerd love to play games and solve puzzles? Anyone interested in gaming or animation will enjoy learning what is going on behind the scenes and learning how to make their very own interactive code creations. Creative nerds who like to play games and have once thought, “I’d change ______ about this game if it was mine” will love this class!

Nerds in this class will code and design a handful of different types of games and animations! They will also be able to save their code online and share their creations with friends and classmates through their Scratch accounts! Here is a sample of programs that students in this class can put together:

  • Pong-style game
  • Maze game
  • Side-scroller game (a 2D game where you see the world from the side)
  • Interactive art
  • Animated story
  • Or any other awesome idea!

We’ll use Scratch, a web-based block coding interface, to learn about fundamental coding concepts! Nerds will learn about things like loops, conditional statements, sensing, variables, logic, and more! They will also learn how code goes together and interacts with the graphics that the user sees.

Our Big Nerds classes for grades 4-7, are engaging and exciting and vary greatly in content and structure, but in some form there is always direct instruction from the teacher, guided practice, and independent or small group work with help and support from peers and staff. We usually begin the day with a team building activity and move into our first lesson. Next is a hands-on activity or project. Halfway through the class, kids will take a brief recess and snack break. A second lesson follows break and the kids will do another project/activity or continue one they were working on. It’s always fun and engaging with hands-on projects!, This is a computer lab based class which involves design or coding software that we provide account access for. The class will be based around learning that software to design or code the assigned projects. In addition to instruction on the software, all of these classes include lessons about how to connect what we are learning to the real world. There may be some building of physical projects mixed in, and we will certainly take breaks, but the majority of the class is spent working in the lab.

Class is 3hrs each day, so bring a snack for break time. Also, bring your own refillable water bottle. Don’t have one? Add our Nerding water bottle to your order and pick up on first day of class!

Your nerd will build and discover like these nerds have.

Your Teacher

Mrs Hess

I love building my own video games and hope you do too! I’m also teaching the Circuits with Makey-Makey class and in there, you can build a totally weird custom controller to play the games you created in this class!
