IN-Person Class

Drones: Aeronautical Engineering

Can you become a master drone pilot?

Have you ever wanted to fly a drone or build a paper airplane that can fly across entire rooms? Do you love flying machines and learning how they work? If the answer to these questions is "Yes", join us as we soar into drones and aeronautical engineering!

Q: What has a nose and flies, but can’t smell? A: An airplane!

Learn all about drones, flying technologies, and the science behind flight! We will fly small but robust (and safe!) drones with built-in cameras and transmitters, and learn flight concepts by building models to fly in our wind tunnel! Learn how drones are being used in conservation, search and rescue, meteorology, and more… maybe even in space exploration!

If you think using drones to save endangered animals, monitor orangutans, or explore caves and volcanoes sounds cool, then this is the class for you!

This class is a perfect fit for any nerds who love airplanes, drones, and other flying machines! Whether you’re a paper airplane enthusiast or a master of drone piloting, this class has something for you. Anyone interested in learning about how flying machines work and getting to fly a drone through obstacles will love this class!

Nerds in this class make a handful of fun flying machines! We’ll learn about how paper can be used to make airplanes that can soar for miles or do crazy tricks. From basic flying discs and drop copters to long-distance gliders and stunt planes, students have plenty of opportunities to be creative and innovative at the same time! Nerds can also test their creations in our wind tunnel!

In this class, nerds learn about a variety of awesome flight-related topics. We’ll leap into the history of flight and talk about how flying machines came to be. We’ll also get a bird’s eye view on the science that enables manmade objects to get off the ground and soar in the sky. Nerds in this class learn how to fly drones, and get to build an obstacle course to race their drones through. From mapping underground mines to exploring faraway planets, we’ll discuss all the amazing ways that drone technology is being applied to change the world!

Our Big Nerds classes for grades 4-7, are engaging and exciting and vary greatly in content and structure, but in some form there is always direct instruction from the teacher, guided practice, and independent or small group work with help and support from peers and staff. We usually begin the day with a team building activity and move into our first lesson. Next is a hands-on activity or project. Halfway through the class, kids will take a brief recess and snack break. A second lesson follows break and the kids will do another project/activity or continue one they were working on. It’s always fun and engaging with hands-on projects!

Class is 3hrs each day, so bring a snack for break time. Also, bring your own refillable water bottle. Don’t have one? Add our Nerding water bottle to your order and pick up on first day of class!

Your nerd will build and discover like these nerds have.
