S.T.E.M. Class

Robotics

Grades: 1-3*
5/5

My other set of wheels is a robot...

Get ready to code 3 different types of robots, Ozobot, Dash and Indi! Our robots can follow lines, detect colors, and be programmed using either paper and markers or a kid- friendly digital program. This class is fun and accessible for early coders!

Q. What’s a robot’s favorite exercise? A. Circuit training!

Description

In this super fun class, we’ll play with different kinds of robots. We have the lil’ Ozobots, who can follow lines and do cool tricks when they drive over different colors. Then there’s the speedy Indi robots, who zip around as they drive over special color tiles. And let’s not forget about Dash, the robot you can program using block coding with an iPad!

But that’s not all! We’ll also build our very own robots called “BrushBots.” They’re made from a small motor, battery, and a toothbrush. Wiggly BrushBots love to run around will NOT listen to any directions you give them! But guess what? You get to take your BrushBot home with you!

Every day, we’ll have new challenges and projects to work on. You’ll get to solve puzzles, learn how to code, and even create your own robot theme park!

The nerds that love this class are interested in robotics and coding, but there is still LOTS of room for creativity, art, and building in this class! Our little robots are easy to understand, but are also capable of complex tasks and conditional logic. This is great for nerds that have no coding or robot experience, but also those that need a challenge!

Nerds will be making lots of code, tracks, mazes, costumes, and 3D obstacles for their robots.

Nerds will also build a vibrating bristle bot and learn to complete a simple circuit with a motor, battery, and LED light! And doesn’t an adorable little bristle bot need a playground? We’ll have to build that, too! The bristle bot and playground will be taken home for more fun…

We will be learning to code our robots, and there are 2 great ways to do that! First, we can use markers to draw tracks for the robot to follow and color pattern “code” to change the behavior of the robot. This is super fun and a very accessible and tangible way for younger nerds to experience coding. The other way to code is with a computer based block coding platform. Nerds can drag and drop blocks into a code sequence, load it onto their bot, and run it!

Throughout the class, nerds will learn fundamentals of coding, how robot use sensors to make decisions, and what robots do in the real world!

Our Little Nerd classes for grades 1-3, are engaging and exciting and vary greatly in content and structure, but in some form there is always direct instruction from the teacher, guided practice, and independent or small group work with help and support from peers and staff. We usually begin the day with a team building activity and move into our first lesson. Next is a hands-on activity or project. Halfway through the class, kids will take a brief recess and snack break. A second lesson follows break and the kids will do another project/activity or continue one they were working on. Bottom line: It’s hands-on, interactive, fun learning.

SUMMER & BREAK CLASSES ONLY: Class is 3hrs each day, so bring a snack for break time. Also, bring your own refillable water bottle. Don’t have one? Add our Nerding water bottle to your order and pick up on first day of class!
