What an exciting week it has been for the Mars Rover Perseverance that successfully landed on Thursday, February 18, 2021! This class has been SO much fun and new mission updates, photos, and video are being released by NASA daily! It’s going to continue to be a very exciting few weeks! Join us to learn about the Martian environment, why we are going there, what the rovers do, and all the exciting science Perseverance is doing on the surface of Mars! Each day nerds will have an awesome project to work on after class and share the next day!

Did you know a 13 year old student named Alex Mather got to name the rover?

Is your nerd:

  1. Interested in current space exploration?
  2. Excited to learn about Mars missions as they are happening?
  3. Wanting to design and build their own Martian mission?

This class is for nerds that are curious about space and love to build. Maybe we have future astronauts, rover drivers, and aerospace engineers among us!

We originally planned this class for our older nerds (4th-7th), but younger kids were interested and excited about mars, so we adapted the curriculum for 2nd-3rd graders who are now also having a *blast*!

  • Rockets
  • Rovers
  • Entry, Descent, and Landing (EDL) System
  • Helicopter
  • Mars Rock Sample
  • Mars Colony blueprint
  • Mars and its environment
  • examine how we get to Mars and land on the surface
  • study the rovers we have previously sent
  • get updates on the current Mars missions, including the NEW Perseverance rover
  • imagine the future of Mars exploration and human colonization

Your Teacher

Ms. Westmoreland

Ms. W has been teaching for 14 years and is a HUGE space and Mars nerd! She even went to see the Curiosity rover launch from Cape Canaveral in 2011!

What You Need

  1. Zoom: Your nerd will be participating in a virtual classroom for the 1 hour teacher led portion of the class using Zoom. Nerds will share their projects, opinions, and discoveries  with 5 to 10 other nerds and celebrate their successes together!
  2. Project After Class: They will then work independently for 1 additional hour after class on an assigned project or in the companion course .
  3. Companion Course: By enrolling in this class nerds will also unlock the day-by-day companion course materials below which will supplement their learning outside of the live Zoom session and includes additional video tutorials or directions to complete their projects.

Device for Zoom: For the best experience install the Zoom application on your device! Laptops or Desktops with a webcam are preferred, iPads and Android tablets should be a second choice.

Supplies for this class are simple, just raid your recycling bin!

Some examples:

  • recyclables for building (cardboard, containers, lids, etc)
  • straws for rockets (disposable or reusable), ideally a few sizes, but we’ll use what you’ve got!
  • when we build our rover, you can choose to build with recyclables or a building set like LEGO
  • egg or small bag of pasta (for “landing”)
  • paper
  • tape

Don’t go buy anything. We challenge the Nerds to be resourceful.

Your nerd will build and discover like these nerds have.

Companion Course

This is the outline of the materials they will access each day after class. Materials may include, videos, tutorials, printable sheets, short quizzes, and images.
