Quick updates and general communication with all you nerds out there!
On Sunday, March 17, 2019, we updated our site with a new look and opened registration for summer 2019 classes! We are so excited! Here’s all the new and not new stuff…
NEW Website Design and Checkout
I don’t want to say the website got a facelift… more like it’s been going to the gym! Micah has been working on it nonstop for months! The registration process is streamlined and should be EASY! It is still the same system as last year, so returning nerds can just login and update grade level.
Same Awesome Location
Desert Sun Child Development Center (Elliot/Dobson)
We love DS! We are renting the entire campus, so it will be all nerds, all the time. It has 6 classrooms, a shady field and playground, private parking lot, and tons of charm.
AM class 9:00-12:00
PM class 1:00- 4:00
(Nerds that stay for both need to pack their own lunch.)
Our staff is the absolute BEST this summer! All certified teachers with years of classroom experience. Welcome to the team:
- Alena Almendarez (5th Grade Science Teacher)
- Jess Suri (K-6 STEM Teacher)
- Stacey Trepanier (6th Grade Lang. Arts Teacher)
- Shea Evans (K-5 Resource Teacher)
- Jennifer Leopardi (K-5 Media Specialist)
- Sarah Fahey (4th Grade Teacher)
- Heather Vehon (4th Eduprize)
All your favorites are back PLUS new ones like:
- Rock and Roll Geology (4th-7th)
- Zombie Survival STEM Challenge (4th-7th)
- Virtual Reality (4th-7th)
- Sphero Robotics and Programming (4th-7th)
Sort of new or new themes:

- Storybook Adventure STEM Challenge (2nd-3rd)
- Space Tech and Engineering (4th-7th)
- Escape Room World Wonders (4th-7th)
Still same old me. I’m so happy to be on this journey with all of you.
So excited to welcome to the Nerding Family some new Ultra Nerds – Ooooh, is that what we should call the teachers? 😉
Jess Suri – K-6 STEM Teacher (Paradise Valley)
Ms. Suri loves engineering and space! She and her students even built a life size model of a Mars Rover! She’ll be teaching some sessions of 3D Printing and 2 brand new classes this summer for 4th-7th graders: Zombie Survival STEM Challenge and Space Tech & Engineering (not a new class title, but will actually be a ton of new content)
Alena Almendarez – 5th Grade Science Teacher (Brisas)
Ms. Almendarez carries a Marauder’s Map purse. Does that answer your questions? She’ll be teaching Wizard Science for 4th-7th (are you surprised?) and Use the Force for 2nd-3rd graders. She also maybe loves Star Wars…
Heather Vehon – 4th Grade Teacher (Eduprize Gilbert)
Ms. Vehon loves science! While studying the human body, she and her class built a “functioning” model of the digestive system. It pooped! She’ll be teaching Circuits with Makey Makey for 4th-7th graders.
Jennifer Leopardi – K-5 Media Specialist (Waggoner)
Ms. Leopardi love-love-loves books, but she also loves tech and has been incorporating Maker Space projects into the library! She will be teaching Storybook Adventure STEM Challenge and Robotics with Ozobot for 2nd-3rd graders!
Shea Evans – K-5 Resource Teacher (Mirada)
Mr. Evans likes to wear a bowtie and may or may not own a button down Pikachu shirt. He will be teaching Space Explorers for 2nd-3rd graders and Drones for 4th-7th graders, but he is also super pumped to teach a brand new class, Virtual Reality for 4th-7th!
Stacey Trepanier – 6th Grade Teacher (New Vistas)
You may say Ms. Trepanier is a “history buff”. You may even say that she is the “National History Day Coordinator for the state of Arizona”… because she is! She’ll be usin’ all that history in the Escape Room: World Wonders class for 4th-7th. She also loves our boy HP, so she’ll be teachin’ Wizard Science, too!
We always have great new classes for our nerds because we never stop learning and growing and making either!
Rock & Roll Geology (4th-7th)
We got rocks. We got a roller. We got some music, too! This class is the brain child of the geocaching king, Mr. Carras.
Zombie Survival STEM Challenge (4th-7th)
A new class by Ms. Suri! Don’t worry, it’s not scary, but it IS fun!
Virtual Reality (4th-7th)
This one’s been in the works for a while and we are super jazzed about it! Oh man, VR is SO FUN! Mr. Evans had jumped aboard to teach it and it’s going to be AWESOME!
Sort-of New Classes
We also have some “new” versions of existing classes! STEM Challenge for 2nd-3rd will have 2 new themes, Storybook Adventure and Build & Tinker. Also, Space Tech & Engineering is getting a bunch of new activities. Escape Room: World Wonders and Robotics with Sphero are new since last summer, but we did run them during our after school program.
Whew! That’s a lot of fun new classes! We can’t wait!
