3D Printing: Create & Design

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to imagine, design, and print your very own 3D creation? In this class, you will learn all about 3D printing, how it works, and learn the software to create your own unique designs! **There is an optional add-on at checkout to have your design 3D printed and shipped to you for $30. Final designs approx 4in x 4in.

Details

Grades: This class is designed for entering 4th-7th graders. *No exceptions on younger kids. This class is too challenging.
Teacher: Mr. Ben (5th-6th grade teacher/Harry Potter enthusiast)
Ask your nerd: Have you ever wondered what it would be like to imagine, design, and print your very own 3D creation? In this class, you will learn all about 3D printing, how it works, and learn the software to create your own unique designs! **There is an optional add-on at checkout to have your design 3D printed and shipped to you for $30. Final designs approx 4in x 4in.

Online Class Format
  1. Your nerd will be participating in a virtual classroom for the 50-minute teacher led portion of the class using Zoom. Nerds will share their clever ideas and designs with 4-7 other students and celebrate their successes together!
  2. They will then work independently for 1 additional hour working in the 3D design software, TinkerCAD.
  3. By enrolling in this class they will also unlock the day-by-day course materials below which includes video tutorials in TinkerCad and project instructions.
Special Requirements for this class
  • Laptop, desktop, or Chromebook required (cannot use tablet or phone)
  • Mouse (recommended)
  • We will be working in a browser based program called TinkerCAD. We will manage your nerd’s account and set them up on the first day of class. No downloads or prep needed.
  • No 3D printer needed. If you do have a 3D printer at home, skip the add-on for your final print and do it yourself! TinkerCAD exports in standard .stl format that will work with any machine.

This is a good fit for…

This is the perfect class for nerds who are interested in 3D printing technology and the amazing impact it has–and will continue to have–in today’s world! We’ll work in TinkerCad, an online software, to learn how to design and build our awesome creations.

What nerds learn:

We’ll learn using in-class demonstrations in TinkerCad and additional online tutorials to view after class. We’ll talk about the engineering design process and how to think about continuous improvement in our designs. Additionally, we’ll talk about what industries are using 3D printing today and the incredible improvements being made in our society, especially in health care! Your nerd will also interact with kids with similar creative interests and will make new friends as they cheer each other on.

Over the 5 days of this class nerds will:

  • Learn about 3D printing process
  • Discover how 3D printing is benefitting the world with inexpensive prosthetics
  • Create 3dimensional designs in TinkerCAD

Gain new nerd skills!

Successful nerds are imaginative learners who enjoy visual planning and designing on the computer. Nerds will share their clever ideas and projects during the week!

**Pro Tip: Gather 4-6 of your nerd’s friends and we’ll set up a private class for your group of nerds!!! Class size min-max is 5-8 including your nerd. Contact us at [email protected]

**Have your Final Design Printed! There is an optional add-on at checkout to have your design 3D printed and shipped to you for $30. Final designs approx 4in x 4in.

Special Requirements for this class

  • Laptop, desktop, or Chromebook required (cannot use tablet or phone)
  • Mouse (highly recommended)

  • No 3D printer needed. If you do have a 3D printer at home, skip the $30 final print add-on and print it yourself! TinkerCAD exports in standard .stl format that will work with any machine.

The 3D design process starts with a 3D Model or Design where the computer file with details about your model must be converted into computer 2D “slices” which the printer will print layer by layer. Depending on the complexity and size, printing a 3D object can take hours or even days to complete.

Enjoy a quick welcome from TinkerCAD. Your nerd's design space where they will be able to create their own 3D design.
