Your Amazing Body! STEM Adventure

Learn about all the systems in your amazing body! Test your lung capacity and build models of your respiratory system, make your own stethoscope and listen to your heart, the center of your circulatory system, and stretch your musculoskeletal system with some yoga! We will do all kinds of STEM adventures to discover the how our bodies work and all the awesome things it can do.

Rawr! Dinosaurs and Paleontology

Are you a mini Paleontologist? Study the past through fossils! Touch real fossils and create model fossils of your own! Learn about types of dinosaurs, how they lived, and what might have happened to them. We will even conduct our own excavation with a dino dig!

Go, Go, Go! Transportation Engineering

Study the Engineering Design Process in this construction class! Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, and Improve your vehicles, rockets, and boats! You will design cars to speed down our derby track! Modify your design to make your vehicle go the fastest or the farthest. Study other types of vehicles like rockets and boats and use them to do even more engineering challenges! This class is offered twice. If your nerd wants to take it again, they can go even deeper with their learning!

Intro To Code

Coding is becoming a fundamental literacy, and even our littles can learn to code! Using interactive movement games, students will learn the fundamentals of programming. They will even code games in a the very simple but powerful Scratch Jr platform while they learn to think sequentially, explore cause and effect, and develop design and problem solving skills.

Bubble Engineers

Everybody loves BUBBLES! We will explore how bubbles behave and investigate the properties of different materials as we engineer all kinds of bubble wands. We will learn about surface tension and the Engineering Design Process, all while fostering problem solving skills. We will even do a fun demonstration with CO2 bubbles that you can hold in your hands!

We know. Slime is all the rage. But do you know how it works? Learn all about states of matter, polymers and linking molecule chains while making different types of Slime, Gak, Dough, and Kinetic Sand. Experiment with your slime by changing variables to get different results!

Space Explorers

Seriously, what’s cooler than space exploration? That’s right. Nothing. In this class we will learn all about our solar system, including important history and recent discoveries! We will experiment with the forces that shape our universe, build and test squeeze rockets, make a comet, and touch real meteorites as we explore and discover space.

How can we move objects? By using the FORCE! Learn all about forces (friction, gravity, push/pull), motion (speed, velocity, acceleration, momentum), and magnetism in this physics class while making model fidget spinners and gyroscopes, exploring magnets, and build simple machines! Build and Tinker STEM Challenge

New STEM challenges each day! Build, experiment, tinker and explore! Build the strongest bridges, fastest balloon cars, strongest catapults, and do all kinds of hands on experiments. This class is about creative solutions to problems, learning through meaningful making, and celebrating the process!

Robotics with Ozobots

Ozobot Bit can be simple or complex. It is a miniature smart robot that can follow lines or roam around freely, detect colors, and can also be programmed using paper and markers or the kid friendly block coder OzoBlockly. Your nerds will learn hands-on about robotics and programming while working on daily challenges. Ozobots Bits are capable of complex movement and color programs using the online OzoBlockly coding environment. Build critical thinking and problem solving skills as you tackle maze competitions and exciting challenges!​

Be inspired by the the heroines and heroes of our favorite stories and find creative solutions to help them solve their problems! Use the engineering design process to build contraptions and accomplish tasks. Bring your creativity and maker skills. Our storybook friends need our help!

Good Vibes Science of Sound and Music

This camp introduces kids to the field of acoustical engineering as they design and improve acoustic devices. After experimenting with shapes and materials that reflect and absorb sound, kids use a decimeter to measure changes in volume. Kids use what they know about sound and vibrations to design acoustic devices that amplify music from a speaker in several locations, as well as make music of their own!

3D Printing

3D printers are changing the game! It’s now easier and faster than ever to bring ideas to 3 dimensional life. Nerds will design 3D models in a kid friendly CAD (Computer Aided Design) program, learn the printing process, watch their creation print, then take it home! Kids will learn the math and spatial reasoning required to navigate the 3D design environment and how to efficiently use the tools to produce their models. Taken this class before? Coding skills are a necessity in our increasingly digital world, and learning to do it makes your nerd a technology creator instead of just a technology consumer. We will use kid friendly block coding software to learn coding concepts such as logic, sensing, variables, conditionals, loops and more. Use your skills to create games, scenes, and animations. For beginning to advanced coders, this class will be differentiated to be a challenge at all levels.

Filmmaking

Learn to use iMovie to make short films! We will study film clips, storyboard, plan shots, and use iMovie to edit video and create movie trailers and short films. We will also explore other video making techniques such as stop motion, green screen, slow motion and special effects.

Graphic Design

Learn principles of design and how to use 2D design software to create your own vector images. Send the images to our Vinyl Cutter and Plotter to cut out custom stickers and vinyl t-shirt designs. Use the heat press to apply your design to your shirt and take home your stickers to apply to… anything!

Circuits with Makey Makey

Using the Makey Makey, we will turn everyday objects into tools to interface with our computers. Turn any conductive material into a keyboard key to build pianos out of bananas, game controllers from gummy worms, or turn your classmates into keys! We will learn the basics of electricity, circuitry, and capacitive sensing in this inventing class.

Learn all about the Engineering Design Process as you Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, and Improve your projects. Study simple machines and put them to work for you. This week’s theme is CARdboard Derby! We have a Pinewood Derby racetrack and you will design and build your own derby cars!

Learn to program robots using Sphero, a powerful rolling robot! Build critical thinking and problem-solving skills as you tackle maze competitions, code tasks, build robo-boats, and complete exciting robot challenges! We will also study the history of robotics and current developments in robotic technologies used in industry, health, and exploration.

Sewing

For grades 4 and up, sewing is for girls AND boys! (Seriously. There were multiple boys in every class last summer!) We will learn beginning and intermediate sewing techniques while completing several projects. We will focus on safety, sewing techniques, and learning to use a sewing machine. Depending on the interests of the students, we will choose from a variety of simple patterns as well as creating our own patterns. Machines and materials for all classes is provided, but you are also welcome to bring your own.

Space Tech & Engineering

Space is basically the coolest, and there is so much new development happening right now in both NASA and SpaceX missions! In this class we will learn all about our solar system, including important history and current happenings! We will experiment with the forces that shape our universe, design and build stomp rockets, make a comet, and create model rovers as we explore and discover space. New this year will be an interactive gravity well experiment and some new projects. You also get take home your stomp rocket launcher!

Wizard Science

Welcome to Hognerds School of SCIENCE and Wizardry! It’s not magic… IT’S SCIENCE! Experiment with chemical reactions in Transfiguration, states of matter in Charms, and acids and bases in Potions. Defense Against the Dark Arts (AKA safety) will be practiced at all times! PLUS you get to dress up in wizard robes (yes, I have a class set of robes…) and make a wand!

Zombie Survival STEM Challenge

Watch out for Zombies! Tackle STEM challenges to get your team to safety! Pack a bag with your supplies and use them to build structures and contraptions to keep the zombies at bay. You might also need to repair your own equipment for survival! If you do get turned into a zombie, don’t worry. You’ll do some work at the CDC to find a cure for yourself!

Virtual Reality

The future is VR! You’ll learn to use software to create and code your own interactive Virtual and Augmented Reality environments. You can even add 360° photos! Then we will build and use a Google Cardboard to experience your creations! You’ll also learn how VR and AR is currently used in industry and what the future has in store for us. We also have Oculus VR headsets to try during class!

Drones

*Redesigned Curriculum for 2019* Learn all about drones and flying technologies! We will fly small but robust (and SAFE!) drones with attached cameras and transmitters, as well as learn and model flight concepts by making other objects fly in our newly upgraded wind tunnel!
