Summer 2021

COVID Safety

measures we are taking

We follow the science – we are nerds, after all – and keep up to date on the most effective safety measures and strategies as reported by the CDC.

We know we are working with kids (who get excited about nerdy stuff!), and we will strive to maintain social distance of 3 feet (CDC recommendation for schools)  as much as possible. For full transparency, 3 ft distance is NOT always possible. Kids are moving around and collaborating in some classes. Our classes are built around community, discussion, and working together, but with small classes of only 12 nerds and huge classrooms, kids will have plenty of space to spread out while working and building! We will also routinely wash hands.

Lunch will be supervised and masks will be on after kids are done eating.

We also think it is critical to have transparency and communication with parents regarding any COVID exposure on campus. In the event that there is an exposure during your class and it is cancelled, or your child is unable to attend because they are sick, we are completely willing to work with you on a reschedule or prorated refund. Regardless, we will work with you on a solution. We are in this together!

UPDATE May 4th, 2021: We will still require masks for everyone on campus, regardless of changes in state or city mask mandates. Face Shields are not allowed as a mask substitute. Gators are also not allowed. Please wear a double layer cloth mask or a filtered mask. Costco has kid size filtered masks in fun colors for really cheap. That is where we got our extras from.

UPDATE June 1, 2021: As we have stated, all of our teachers and adult staff are vaccinated. Our teachers will primarily wear masks in solidarity with the nerds but will have the option, only when providing whole group direct instruction where kids will be seated and at least 6ft away, to remove their mask. This will provide for better connection, expression and engagement for nerds during that instruction. Teachers will wear their masks when circulating the room and working in closer proximity to nerds. Please let us know if you have any concerns about this or need more clarification on any of our safety policies.

Class Structures

How we run classes at each grade level.

  • Little Nerds
    Grades 1-3
  • Big Nerds
    Grades 4-7

Our Little Nerd classes are engaging and exciting and vary greatly in content and structure, but in some form there is always an engaging, interactive lesson from the teacher, guided practice, and independent or small group work with help and support from peers and staff.

We usually begin the day with a team building activity and move into our first lesson. Next is a hands-on activity or project. Halfway through the class, kids will take a brief recess and snack break. A second lesson follows break and the kids will do another project/activity or continue one they were working on.

Bottom line: It's hands-on, interactive, fun learning.

Our Big Nerds classes have 2 types: regular classroom classes and computer lab* classes. The regular classroom classes run very similarly in format to the Little Nerds classes, essentially lesson, building/work, break, lesson, building/work. It's always fun and engaging with hands-on projects!

Our computer lab* classes are Graphic Design, Virtual Reality, Coding Games, and 3D Printing. All of them require design or coding software that we provide account access for. The class will be based around learning that software to design or code the assigned projects. In addition to instruction on the software, all of these classes include lessons about how to connect what we are learning to the real world. There may be some building of physical projects mixed in, and we will certainly take breaks, but the majority of the class is spent working in the lab.

*We strongly recommend against taking 2 computer lab classes in the same week. It’s too much sitting and screen time! Mix and match with a non-computer lab class if your nerd stays all day!
